The Pakistan Society for Biotechnology and Molecular Biology (PSBMB) organized its 14th Biennial Conference on “Molecular Biosciences: Research and Innovations” at the Dr. A. Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (KIBGE), University of Karachi, from December 9–12, 2018. The conference provided a platform for participants to exchange ideas with leading experts in molecular sciences and to engage with internationally renowned researchers on recent advancements. Presentations highlighted progress in biochemistry, molecular biology, and allied disciplines, fostering research and educational development. The event opened with a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Abid Azhar, Director General of KIBGE, followed by remarks from Vice Chancellor Prof. M. Ajmal Khan. Prof. S. N. Hasnain delivered the Professor Mohammad Ata-ur-Rahman Memorial Lecture, acknowledging his lifelong commitment to promoting research culture in Pakistan and the continuous efforts of PSBMB and KIBGE in advancing molecular biosciences. As Chief Guest, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, the renowned nuclear scientist and metallurgical engineer, emphasized Pakistan’s potential for rapid progress, citing abundant natural resources and talented individuals. He lamented the underutilization of expertise and stressed the need to recognize merit and properly channel abilities to achieve national development comparable to countries like Turkey and Malaysia. The three-day event featured multiple sessions with eminent speakers from across Pakistan. The ECO Science Foundation sponsored Dr. Sorouch Sardari, Director of the Pasteur Institute, Tehran, as an invited speaker. Its President, Prof. Dr. Manzoor Hussain Soomro, also chaired a session, underscoring the importance of STEM education, inquiry-based science education (IBSE), and strong linkages among academia, industry, and R&D organizations for science-driven economic growth.
